Why convert an image to JPG?

JPG (also written JPEG) is the picture format that almost everything understands: every phone, browser, social app, printer and photo editor. People convert images to JPG for a few simple reasons:

It works everywhere

Many upload forms, job portals and government websites accept only JPG.

The file is smaller

A photo saved as JPG is usually far smaller than the same photo as PNG, so it uploads and sends faster.

It is perfect for photos

JPG handles the many colours of a photograph very well.

It saves data

Smaller pictures use less mobile data when you share them on WhatsApp or email.

Tips for the best JPG quality and a small file

Use 85 to 92 percent

This is the sweet spot. The picture still looks sharp, and the file is much smaller than at 100 percent.

Resize big photos

A phone photo is often much larger than a website needs. Set a smaller width, or use the Image Resizer.

Keep your original

JPG loses a little detail each time it is saved. Convert from the original file, not from a JPG that was already converted.

Still too big?

Run the JPG through the Image Compressor to cut the size further for forms with a size limit.

Common problems and quick fixes

The background turned black or white

JPG cannot be transparent. Pick the background colour you want in the converter before you convert. White is the default.

The picture looks blurry

Raise the quality, and do not make the output size larger than the original picture.

The file is still too large

Lower the quality a little, reduce the width and height, or compress it afterwards.

My phone photo will not open or upload

It may be a HEIC photo. Convert it with the HEIC to JPG Converter.
